In March of 2013 while I was ordering award ribbons for my boss a ‘light bulb’ went off in my head and I said, “If I had this website I could do this business.” Since then I have worked hard to take my business from that moment of conception to writing a business plan and testing the waters. In March of 2014 I took the next step and became official by registering my business with the State of Florida.
I found the FLWBC when I was looking for help on how to formulate my idea and learn how to grow it into a successful business.
The staff has been very helpful and encouraging. They have guided me along the way and given me sound advice on how to get started and where to find the necessary information and resources to do my research on similar businesses and write my business plan. The FLWBC has hosted networking events, meetings and ongoing classes that are always beneficial to me as a business owner.
One event was a business trade show they hosted in November of 2013 that propelled me into action. I needed to create a display to showcase my business, “A Touch of Ribbon”. I received many positive comments and feedback on my booth and people could see exactly what printing on ribbon is all about.
It was hard work, but well worth the effort, as this event gave me the confidence I needed to move ahead, and it even generated a few on site orders as well as invitations to display at other events that let people see what I have to offer.
Since then I have created an Etsy store (Touchofribbon) as a place where I can send customers who are interested in seeing some of my line. I am currently in the process of building my own website and the Etsy store has given me the ability to have an online presence during this transition as well as experience in handling internet sales.
Most recently, in September, I was one of four women owned businesses to receive a 2014 Rock Award, presented by the Florida Women’s Business Center, for utilizing resources to the fullest. It is a great honor for me to have received this award as I know there were hundreds of women to choose from.
With help and guidance from the Florida Women’s Business Center, I am currently working on my detailed business plan. This will serve as a road map to increase revenue, maximize profits, and keep me focused on obtaining measurable results for greater success.
